Last week, Guiseley School held its first communal KS5 iftar, marking a significant moment of reflection and unity for our community. The evening was defined not by ceremony, but by the joyful, sincere participation of students and staff who came together to observe Ramadan.
Throughout the day, students and staff members committed to fasting together. Seeing staff join their students in this practice brought a deeper level of solidarity to the school, highlighting a communal willingness to understand and support one another’s experiences.
The evening concluded with a potluck prepared by staff and students, with a selection of food and drink to open the fast with.
"It was wonderful to see so many students come together for the student iftar and celebrate such a special time of year. Many students were fasting, and it was lovely to see friends supporting one another... It was also great that some staff members joined in and fasted as well, which made the evening feel even more inclusive and brought our school community closer together." - Miss Haider, Teacher of Psychology and Criminology.
The event served as a reminder of the quiet strength found in community. By sharing a meal and a significant cultural experience, we moved past the routine of the school day to acknowledge our shared humanity. The warmth and respect shown by all participants demonstrated the maturity and empathy that define our student body.
This first Iftar was a meaningful step in fostering a school environment where every individual feels seen, respected, and truly at home.
