Guiseley School Geography Department Earns National Centre of Excellence Status

Guiseley School is celebrating a major milestone after its Geography Department was awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) alongside the highly coveted Centre of Excellence status by the Geographical Association. Having first secured the SGQM last year - and previously winning the award four years ago under the previous Head of Department - the team has maintained its exceptional standards to earn the quality mark once again, while elevating its achievement to rank among the country's elite.

The Centre of Excellence status is a rare national distinction awarded to just 13 schools across the UK last year. While the SGQM recognises overall quality and innovation in teaching, Centre of Excellence status is reserved exclusively for departments that act as hubs of outstanding practice, driving educational leadership and inspiring the wider teaching community.

To achieve this double distinction, the Guiseley geography team assembled a comprehensive portfolio showcasing their ongoing impact. The submission highlighted an ambitious, inclusive curriculum that fosters deep enquiry and global awareness, alongside rich fieldwork opportunities that allow students to explore human and physical processes firsthand beyond the classroom.

The Geographical Association grants Centre of Excellence status to departments demonstrating sustained success, active leadership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing geography education. Securing both accolades highlights not only the department's high academic standards, but also a continuous drive for innovation that ensures geography is accessible and engaging for all learners.

This recognition reflects the daily culture of passion, expertise, and dedication that defines the Guiseley School Geography Department. Congratulations to the entire team on this remarkable, nationally recognised achievement.
