On January 22nd, students from our school visited the University of Bradford’s forensic department for a hands-on immersion into the world of criminal investigation.
Fieldwork and Evidence Collection
The morning session required students to act as Crime Scene Investigators. Wearing full forensic protective gear, they processed a simulated murder scene in small groups. The tasks involved using professional CSI kits to:
- Document and photograph evidence.
- Dust for fingerprints.
- Create casts of shoe prints found at the scene.
Laboratory Analysis
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the university’s state-of-the-art laboratories. Operating as forensic scientists, students conducted chemical tests to identify blood and gunshot residue. They also used high-powered microscopes to compare hair and fiber samples recovered from the scene.
A highlight of the day was a visit to the 'bone lab,' where students examined a 500-year-old human skeleton. Staff taught the group how to determine age and gender through skeletal analysis.
Commendable Conduct
University staff praised the students for their engagement and technical aptitude throughout the day. The facilitators noted that the group was a credit to the school, demonstrating both professional curiosity and excellent teamwork.
