Last week, a group of excited Year 8 Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) students from Guiseley School traded West Yorkshire for the sun-drenched streets of Barcelona, embarking on a packed five-day cultural and linguistic adventure.
The journey began with a bright and very early 3:30 AM start on Monday, 15th June, at Leeds Bradford Airport. The students touched down in Catalonia by mid-morning. After checking into their hostel, they threw themselves straight into the action, starting with a scenic visit to the famous, mosaic-filled Parc Güell.
Tuesday
Tuesday kicked off the educational heart of the trip. Students attended a morning session at a local Barcelona language school on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, putting their classroom Spanish straight to the test with native speakers.
The rest of the day was a whirlwind of breathtaking architecture:
- A walking tour past Antoni Gaudí’s famous La Pedrera and Casa Milà.
- An inspiring, dedicated tour of the iconic, towering Sagrada Família.
- A walk down Las Ramblas.
- Free time to explore the marina, followed by an authentic evening tapas meal at Nervion Restaurant.
Wednesday
Wednesday shifted focus to history, sport, and culture. Football fans were in their element during a morning tour of Camp Nou, followed by a scenic walk past the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) up to the Olympic Park and the historic Montjuïc Castle, offering panoramic views of the city.
The absolute highlight for many was Wednesday evening's hands-on Spanish cooking class on Carrer de Lancaster, where students learned the secrets of traditional cuisine and prepared their own evening meal and dessert.
Thursday
No trip to the region is complete without a bit of high-octane fun. On Thursday, the cohort headed down the coast to PortAventura, spending the afternoon and evening tackling some of Europe's tallest and fastest rollercoasters before a late-night coach ride back to the hostel.
Friday
After a brilliant, fast-paced week, a tired but thoroughly culturally enriched group of Year 8s touched back down at Leeds Bradford Airport at 12:55 PM on Friday, 19th June, greeted by proud parents. The trip was a resounding success, giving Guiseley students a real-world confidence boost in their language skills and memories to last a lifetime.
¡Bravo, Year 8!
