Year 8 Students Visit The University of Leeds Engineering Dept.

On Friday 6th June, some of our Year 8s had the fantastic opportunity to attend a trip to The University of Leeds’ Engineering Department. This is in relation to Guiseley School’s recent attainment of the Royal Society Partnership Grant.

This highly sought-after grant supports original and engaging science projects in schools, fostering collaboration between students, teachers, and practicing scientists. Our successful project, “Biomechanics: 3D structures in Everyday Applications”, has given students a unique opportunity to work closely with a professional scientist from The University of Leeds and The University of Sheffield.

Students investigated how 3D printed designs perform in real-world scenarios—testing strength, durability, and efficiency across various applications. Our Year 8s also gained hands-on experience with 3D design and printing technologies while also learning how to analyse data and draw evidence-based conclusions. It was such an exciting chance for them to be part of a day’s research at the university and explore cutting-edge engineering and materials science in a truly practical context.

We also wanted to give a huge ‘Well Done!” to Mia and Rylee, who completed their task of assembling a steam-powered rotating cog first in an Engineering exercise. This was originally a three or four person task, and they managed to complete it with just the two of them - and finished faster than any other team! Brilliant work girls.

We all had a wonderful time learning more about Engineering, and our Year 8s have much to think about in regard to future careers in STEM. Thank you again to The University of Leeds for the opportunity.
